The majority of Journey House graduates attended college or post-secondary school, but cannot depend on their families for emotional or financial support. The Bridge provided a safe and comfortable pace to live for those clients who were not able to obtain college dorms, were pursuing trade/technical certifications or who faced homelessness but wanted to continue their education. The Bridge operated for four intense years but was forced to close due to lack of funding and the overwhelming responsibility of housing twelve former foster youth at one location. For twenty-five years, Journey House operated as a group home for teenage boys on probation.

Pregnant again at 18, she got clean and moved into a residential program run by St. Anne’s Family Services for homeless expectant mothers with foster care or juvenile detention histories. A dependency court report would later describe the home as filthy, and the social worker accused Mckenzie of smoking marijuana and possibly other drugs around the child. (Mckenzie said she never used drugs around her children.) The boy was taken away and Mckenzie was sent to a group home, she said. At age 16, Mckenzie was living on the streets of Los Angeles with her first boyfriend, Sean, when she realized she was 4½ months pregnant. Their son was born in April 2013, and Mckenzie, Sean and the baby moved with her mother, Cat, into a converted garage in Mid-City. Later that month, on her 23rd birthday, Mckenzie signed papers to move into PATH Gramercy, transitional housing for 16 women ages 18 to 24 who are expecting or have children under 5.

After residential services and The Bridge program were discontinued in 2008, residents were helped with securing their own apartments or transitioned into other housing programs. Closing the Bridge program reinforced de-institutionalization by providing residents with the opportunity to instill ownership and responsibility for their circumstances. It remains the only stable, caring, and supportive place for many of the foster youth who were once residents at either the group home or The Bridge.

The Beyond Foster Care (BFC) campaign launched at Journey House in 2015 as a story telling effort to raise awareness on the impacts of age out polices that affect programs and services for former foster youth. Over 50 Journey House members co-designed the initiative, creating Journey House’s first official advocacy program in its history. BFC builds on Journey House’s long-standing commitment to support former foster and probation reach self-sufficiency by creating a community support network.
